Some thrifty ATM machine users are able to mitigate the effects of surcharges, which are usually a flat rate regardless of how much money is withdrawn, by taking out larger sums of money. Perhaps because they've seen their bottom lines harmed by this common practice, some savvy ATM owners are now responding by charging surcharges as a percentage of a withdrawal when customers use their Triton ATM machines.

Before purchasing an ATM, a merchant must consider how profitable the machine will be. Business owners should consider foot traffic at a particular location and how much they will charge consumers to use the machine. While the standard fee is usually several dollars, percentage fees are becoming more popular among owners who want to boost their revenue streams. Some machines have the ability to charge a flat rate or a percentage rate depending on which is higher.

Even though consumers may be dissuaded from using ATMs because of this new industry trend, owners who are able to charge the highest amount possible without diminishing traffic will generate the most revenue.

In addition, ATM owners should understand that percentage fees, in lieu of flat fees, are legal. Regulation E of the Federal Reserve's Electronic Fund Transfer Act, which dictates consumer rights involving ATM use, does not limit the amount that can be charged by an ATM operator, nor does it prevent owners from charging a percentage of the transaction instead of a flat rate.

Not all models of ATMs are technologically capable of being able to make the distinction between different rates, so prospective ATM owners may need to seek advice from an experienced ATM reseller that can steer business owners in the right direction when they are buying an ATM machine.
