Network crimes: The next wave of ATM machine theft

Technology has allowed ATMs to be connected electronically to other devices.

This year, thieves are expected to utilize a new form of ATM theft that could be both more profitable and less risky than using skimming devices.

Earlier this week, this blog detailed the expected surge in skimming crimes in 2012, but ATM owners will also need to be on the lookout for tech-savvy criminals who are embracing more sophisticated, clandestine methods of fraud.

Advanced ATM networks truly are a double-edged sword for ATM owners and merchants who plan to buy an ATM machine. While technology has streamlined communication between different devices, it has also exposed ATM networks so that if one machine's defenses are compromised, many more ATMs in that network could be in jeopardy.

In 2009, IT industry news source Network World reported that malware programs had been installed on several ATMs, all of which used the Windows XP operating system, throughout Eastern Europe. When an unsuspecting user engaged in a transaction, criminals were able to control the machine remotely, allowing them to steal the user's money. The program also had the ability to record PIN and card data information.

According to Bank Info Security, more ATMs are using common operating systems, such as Windows XP, that criminals are familiar with and can hack into with relative ease. ATM mini bank owners may not know such theft is taking place until customers report money being stolen.

"Hacking remote access for servicing [point of sale] will be the criminal hackers' next breakout money-making venture," McAfee consultant Robert Siciliano told the news source. "They are just now getting good at it and realizing it's much lower risk than applying skimming hardware."

Trusted ATM resellers provide machines that may initially come equipped with older operating systems, so owners may need to look for upgrade options. These providers of Hyosung ATM machines should be able to help ATM owners develop enhanced network solutions.
